Her first letter arrived sometime last summer.
I collected her letters, mixed them up with my notes, and collaged different versions of her world and mine in my films. The relationship between the fragments keeps on changing depending on which ones are paired together. This discontinuity condenses space, time, and information.
I remember one day she wrote me about ‘dialectical montage,’ a film editing method of cutting conflicting or unrelated images, text, and sound together. She said, when any two images are placed side by side, we immediately assume that they are related in some way, and we try to make sense of their relation.
In her last letter, she asked: How exactly are we similar and different?
